    How Long Does a Pulley Injury Take to Heal in Climbing

    Finger injuries are almost inevitable for climbers who push themselves. Here's what the research actually says about healing time by grade, two real recovery stories, and what you can do about it.

    "How long is this going to take to heal?" That's the question I get more than any other regarding finger injuries as a coach, especially pulley injuries, as they are by far the most common injury in climbing. So many of the athletes I've worked with have a history of having had a finger injury, have gotten one along the way, or know of someone who has had one. Many of the athletes I ended up coaching reached out to me while dealing with one, mid rehab, looking for guidance, or simply wanting some support on how to approach it.

    Some have even developed a finger injury under my coaching, and this is important to say because no matter how good the training plan is, no matter how thoughtful the coaching is, there is always some risk, and nobody can eliminate that completely. The truth is, if you're a climber, you have all the odds against you when it comes to a finger injury, and believing you can get away without ever having one is just unrealistic, unless you are not pushing yourself very much, which is also okay. But if you found my blog, you are probably pushing yourself, and finger injuries are inherently a part of that. That doesn't make pushing yourself in climbing a bad idea, it just means you can't do it thoughtlessly. You need a plan, and you need to understand how and why you do things.

    It's also worth understanding upfront that a finger injury isn't one thing only. It can be serious enough to properly disrupt your climbing, or it can be barely anything, a little niggle that stays with you for a few weeks but barely disrupts your daily routine.

    I'm not a physio, and I don't want to pretend that I have all the answers, or that I can remotely diagnose you. Ultimately this article is just my interpretation of the evidence I looked at, mixed with what I have seen coaching climbers through this kind of injury and my own thoughts on it. But hopefully we can get a rough idea of where you're standing with a pulley injury, and what your options are next.     The biggest thing I want you to take from this article is that a pulley injury is not the end of the world. If you've got a sore finger right now, plenty of climbers have been exactly where you are, and gone on to climb hard again, some of them even while still recovering, not just after. This is why I always say that pain is a terrible indicator of the severity of an injury, for example if you bite your tongue, that would really hurt, but how bad of an injury is that actually? Pain level and injury severity are not the same thing, and confusing the two is where most climbers go wrong.

    I can give you rough times on tendon and ligament healing, but this will tell you nothing on how long YOUR finger injury will take to heal. Your recovery, your age, your personal physiology, all of it is unique to you and this is what will ultimately determine how long your recovery will be.

    So that's what we'll go through here. What the research actually says about healing times. What changes those numbers for you specifically. Two real examples from athletes I've coached, one minor, one a full rupture, so you can see real life examples for yourself. And what you can actually do while you're in it like, tracking pain, staying strong, and getting back on the wall.

    There’s No Fixed Number

    I wish I could give you a fixed number. I really do. Wouldn’t that be amazing? It would make this whole thing easier for both of us. But healing doesn't work like that, and anyone who gives you an exact number, without knowing your injury, your history, and how you've treated it in the first few days is guessing.

    So no, I can't tell you how long exactly it will take your injury to heal, but what I can give you in exchange is options. Ranges. A way to understand roughly where you sit, and what tends to happen from there. That's more useful than a fake number anyway, because it means you can start making decisions instead of just waiting around for a date that was never real in the first place.

    Healing Time by Grade

    We already established that there isn't a universal timeline, because how long this takes will be influenced by things like: your age, how bad the injury actually is, your sleep, non climbing related stress, your recovery habits… All of them play a massive part in the healing process of all injuries.

    Still, let's go roughly through the established healing time for the tendons and ligaments involved, so we can explore and use that as a reference point, not a deadline. And look into where you might be.

    The grading system comes from Volker Schöffl and his team, who published a study in 2003 looking at around 600 injured climbers. It's still the one most climbing physios and doctors use today, and it's been backed up since by further systematic reviews.

    As for how long each grade roughly takes to heal, here's what the wider research suggests. But bear in mind these are rough guides of healing time, not pain relief, and not necessarily what you'll personally experience. Your timeline might be quicker, might be slower.

    Grade 1 (this would be a strain, not a real tear): 4 to 6 weeks of progressive rehab and you're usually back to your normal training load.

    Grade 2 (partial tear of the A2 or A3, or a full tear of the A4): Similar time frame as for a grade 1, around 6-8 weeks, of progressive rehab, and you're usually back to your normal training load.

    Grade 3 (a full rupture of the A2 or A3): this is the one people panic about most, but it's usually pretty straightforward to deal with. Progressive rehab for 4 to 6 weeks before you're consistently climbing again, then building back up to full training load over 3 to 4 months.

    Grade 4 (multiple pulleys ruptured, or a rupture combined with other damage): this one usually needs surgery, and the timeline is slightly unclear. As some say around 6 months, others up to 1 year…

    One thing worth taking with you, because I think it matters more than the numbers themselves. Pain going away doesn't mean you're healed. Inflammation tends to settle within a few weeks after the injury, and pain goes soon after it, but that doesn't mean the injury is healed, as the pulley isn't done healing at that point, sometimes not even close. So if you're basing your return to full training purely on whether it still hurts, you can get misguided here. Track the pain and use it as a guide, but once it's gone, stay patient and keep it progressive for little while.

    What Actually Changes Your Recovery Time

    The numbers above are ranges for a reason. Two climbers with the exact same grade 3 injury can have completely different outcomes depending on what they do next. Or even their climbing history. I have known climbers dealing with a grade 1 pulley injury get it sorted in as much as 2-4 weeks, others somewhere over 5 months.

    Recovery habits are probably the biggest one. It doesn't matter how good your rehab protocol is, if your recovery habits are bad, you're not going to recover as quickly as you hope. Keep it simple, keep it progressive, sleep and eat well, avoid alcohol and try to keep your stress levels low.

    Age matters too, although I don't think it is as black and white as people assume it is. Tissue in older people generally takes a bit longer to remodel. But I've seen plenty of older athletes recover quickly because they were patient and consistent, had good recovery habits, and plenty of younger climbers set themselves back months because they rushed it.

    Case Study

    I want to share two examples from athletes I've worked with. I'll keep them anonymous, but both stories are real, and I think they show just how wide that range actually is.

    One athlete of mine was trying his 8c project when he came to me with what at first seemed like an A1 pulley strain. A local physio confirmed it as a grade 1 A2 pulley injury. We managed the load, backed off the aggressive crimping for a bit, and kept general strength ticking over. Pain was gone within 3 weeks, and 7 weeks later he climbed his project.

    The other story is of a close friend and former athlete. A full A2 rupture, grade 3, the real deal. That athlete climbed their hardest ever boulder, 7B, 2 and a half months after that injury.

    I share both because I want to give both hope and perspective. It's not always the worst case scenario you might find on the internet, people dealing with a grade one or grade two pulley injury for months and months that never seems to go away.

    I've had the pleasure to work with athletes who had a very tough process too, to be honest. They came with a bunch of pulley injuries. Some we managed to fix within a couple of weeks, and others they carried for a year or even longer. By the time we stopped working together, one of them hadn't properly healed. It shows how wide this healing process is, even within the same person, who can heal one pulley in a couple of weeks, but then a different one takes him over a year, which apparently were also the same grade injuries.

    Sometimes with rehab, the hardest thing is just to stabilize an injury so we can get you climbing as soon as possible at that intensity you feel passionate about, without neglecting the injury we're trying to deal with. In a way, it's a beautiful process.

    Track the Pain

    If there's one thing I will repeat until people are sick of hearing it, it's this. Track your pain. Every day, two or three times a day if you can. Not just "does it hurt yes or no," but where, how much on a 1 to 10, what you did in the session, how it felt that evening, how it felt the next morning.

    Pain isn't a reliable marker of healing on its own, we've already covered that. But tracked over three or four weeks, it becomes something else entirely. You start to see what made it worse and what made it better. You start to understand where the line is between pushing enough to keep progressing and pushing too much and setting yourself back. That's not something you get from one good or bad day. It's something you only get from the data, built up over time.

    This is genuinely one of the best tools you have for fighting an injury while still training around it. It won't heal the pulley for you, but it will tell you exactly how much you can lean on it without making things worse.

    Keep Training, Not Guessing Blind

    Being injured doesn't mean you need to stop completely, please do not stop completely, it will probably not help.

    There is so much you can still do when you have a pulley injury. For instance climbing, depending on how bad the injury is, you will probably get away with pretty hard sessions still. And if not, you can work on general strength, mobility, the other hand, your footwork, your core, your technique. Most people tend to see an injury as a definitive sign to fully stop, when actually it's more of a detour. You come back from a good rehab stronger in areas you neglected before, and often stronger over all not just recovered.

    Working with pain, carefully and with a proper plan and guidance, is often part of the process. Complete avoidance of pain isn't always the answer, but neither is pushing through everything and hoping for the best. It's a conversation you should be having with yourself or with your coach, not something to go through on your own without reflecting on it.

    Pain Is Not the End of the World

    I said it at the start and I'll say it again at the end, because I think it's the single most important thing to take from this. A pulley injury, even a bad one, is not the end of the world. It's not the end of your climbing, and it's very rarely the end of your progress long term.

    It feels like it at the moment. I get that. But I've seen this over and over with some of the strongest climbers out there, with my own athletes. Grade 1, 2, 3, 4 pulley injuries come back to hard climbing before you know it. People come back stronger, more aware of their bodies, and better at managing load than they were before.

    Track your pain. Track your sessions in general, how they went, your motivation, your fatigue. Write it down in a notebook, because this is something you will carry with you until the end of time. Obviously the sessions you did five years ago don't have a lot to say about why you feel a bit weird today. But if you get into the habit of tracking everything, you will be able to go back a couple of weeks, even months, and assess what you've been doing, why you might be feeling weaker, why you might be feeling more tired, or why you might be feeling really strong. You will be able to see what you have been doing over the last few months and assess whether it is working, whether it's hurting you, what is making you feel fit.

    And you will learn to look at an injury as an opportunity to develop skills you have neglected up until now, an opportunity to grow. Learning to cope with the frustration and discomfort an injury brings is a precious life skill you take with you.     What to Do About It?

    Lay off climbing a little, let the injury settle. Once you know what's going on with your finger and where you stand, begin with a little progressive loading. If climbing is too much right now, start by loading the finger with a fingerboard. Once you feel ready, start climbing again, progressively, testing what upsets your finger and what it tolerates. If one of the sessions feels like it has upset your finger, or the pain after the session has aggravated a little, don't worry, this is normal. That's exactly what the tracking is for, look back, see what changed, and go a little easier for the next week or two.

    Stronger climbers get injured less. General strength training gives you margin, it lowers how close to your max effort a given move demands, so you're not climbing on the edge of your limit session after session. I go deeper into that in Strength Training for Rock Climbers.

    Recovery matters just as much, arguably more. Adaptation doesn't happen during training, it happens after, while you sleep, eat, and manage whatever stress you're carrying.
